Interview tip- what do you ask them?

You’re in your interview finest, and you have an extra copy of your resume in hand. During that seemingly endless wait in the waiting room, your mind races as you think about the millions of questions they could potentially ask you. What should you be prepared to answer during an internship interview?

There are some basic questions that you should always be ready to answer. Before your next internship interview, go over these questions and think about how you would answer them. Leave a comment with your best responses!

Why do you want to intern here?
What makes you interested in design/public relations/marketing/sales etc.?
What makes you the best candidate for this internship?
What is the most valuable thing you learned at your last internship/job? (ALWAYS be prepared to go over your resume, bullet point by bullet point!)
What is your best quality?
How would you describe yourself?
Why are you a good fit for this company?
What is your availability?
Can you receive credit?

..what other questions do YOU ask?

How do you write a cover letter?

Rachel requested that we post some tips on writing cover letters, so here they are! I got these helpful tips from my college career service center, so if you have access to such resources, I highly suggest you use them. Thanks, UCSD!

Content
1. ALWAYS address the letter to a specific person. If a name is not included in the listing, address it to "To Whom it May Concern," or "Hiring Manager."

2. Write each cover letter SPECIFICALLY for the company and/or position you are seeking. The last thing you want is Quiksilver's design team getting a cover letter that you wrote for Yves Saint Laurent's design team! They are drastically different companies that cater to different kinds of lifestyles, and would appreciate different experiences.

3. Begin with the purpose of your letter, stating the specific internship position you seek. In many cases, human resources handles the hiring of interns, so they receive a multitude of resumes for different internship positions. If you don't specify which internship you are seeking, they may toss your resume to the side.

4. If you were referred by a previous/current intern, or by someone you know in the company, address that in your first paragraph as well.

4. In your second paragraph, tie your qualifications to what you know about the position or organization. Refer the reader to the resume for more details.

5. Also in your second paragraph, tell them why you are interested in this field or company. Make the reader aware that you have done your homework and know something about the organization and how it fits with your skills, strengths, objectives, and interests.

6. In your closing paragraph, request the next step in the employment process: an interview.

Formatting
1. At the top, write your full name and contact information (phone number, e-mail, home address).

2. Use a business letter format, block style, with everything beginning at the left margin. Employers will not be impressed by a pink font or icons on your resume.

3. If mailing, use the same good quality paper as your resume.

4. Rather than attaching your cover letter, use it as the body of your e-mail, unless otherwise indicated.

interview tip- what will they ask you?

You did it! You worked hard on your cover letter and resume, sent it out, and got an interview! Congratulations on scoring that interview, but your hard work isn’t over just yet. It is a common misconception that there is no need to prepare for an interview; after all, you did blow them away with your amazing cover letter and resume! Unfortunately, this isn’t the case, and every interview requires a little bit of studying. Prior to your interview, log on to the company’s website and do some research. What does the company do? What is their history? Who are their clients? What services to they offer? Do they have multiple locations? By gathering this and other pertinent information, you can reflect and see what you could bring to the table as an intern. It will make answering the dreaded question, “Why should we hire you?” a lot easier!

A Day in the Life of...a Public Relations Intern!

Ever wonder what it would be like to work in fashion public relations? Well here's your chance to hear about what goes on behind one fashion pr company's doors. Jenny Raja's wrote about her experience interning at a fashion pr firm in London on PRCouture.com, a highly acclaimed fashion pr blog that I myself contribute to.

"G.L.A-M.O.R.O-U-S. Similar to Fergie, I too got a chance to taste life in the fast lane. Working for a Fashion PR firm in London last summer, I was exposed to the all of the latest designs from clients such as Versace, Tommy Hilfiger, Orla Kiely, and 7 For All Mankind. As the wide-eyed American intern, I flipped out to find Halle Berry’s Oscar gown by Elie Saab just lying around the office showroom. My colleagues may have teased me, but I certainly took pictures to document my findings to share with my friends back home.

And don’t get me started on preparations for In-Style’s Fifth Birthday Party, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, which featured the most famous dresses through the years. In the showroom, I held one of Gianni Versace’s most famous designs: the 1994 black dress held together with gold safety pins. Meanwhile, our company co-director nonchalantly recollected the day Liz Hurley came in to the office with then-boyfriend Hugh Grant to find a dress to wear to a film premiere. After many unsuccessful attempts, she found this gown tucked in a corner cabinet and then *poof!* she made it big on the red carpet..."
